What Causes Eyelash Deficiency? What You Need to Know

If you are suffering from eyelash deficiency, you might feel embarrassed by your lashes. Thick, long lashes are almost a beauty prerequisite in American culture; we’re bombarded with images of how women should look and if you don’t look that way, you are made to feel second best.

Chin up, sweetie: first, you should never let anyone make you feel inferior. But you should know there are steps you can take to stop your eyelashes falling out. You’ll need to figure out what’s causing the problem. Basically, there are 4 reasons why lash loss occurs, so read on for the 411:

1.    Medical Causes of Eyelash Deficiency

Let’s start with the most basic: there are some conditions you can have that will cause your lashes to fall out such as alopecia, which causes your crowning glory to thin as well. If you have an immune disorder, hypothyroidism, or are going through menopause, then eyelash loss is common. There is also a certain mite, d. folliculorum, which can cause eyelash loss. (Ew! I know, but it does happen.) If you think one of these underlying conditions may be causing your lash loss, you need to follow up with your doctor.

2.    Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara is great for those days when you know you’ll be getting a little misty-eyed, but also very difficult to remove. Most of us make the mistake of pulling or scrubbing our lashes to remove waterproof mascara, which can cause damage and even cause lashes to fall out! If you must wear waterproof mascara, be sure to use a special eye makeup remover at the end of the day. Taking this extra step can safely get rid of the mascara without causing damage to your eyelashes.

3.    Allergic Reactions

If you have sudden lash loss, it’s time to check out your eye makeup since you might be having an allergic reaction. If you have recently changed products and suddenly noticed lash loss, discontinue use immediately and call your doctor or dermatologist. Beauty experts remind you to toss your old eyelash products every 3 months for a reason: germs can get into your products and cause irritation contributing to eyelash loss.

4.    Dietary Restriction

Check your diet: if you have recently begun a crash diet or have limited your protein and caloric intake, you could be losing lashes as well as pounds and inches. Make sure your diet contains adequate amounts of both calories and protein to keep your body healthy and functioning well, and take a multivitamin supplement to help counteract lash loss.
