A True Story about Eyelash Growth

When I was a teenager, I made extra money babysitting my neighbor’s kids. Two sisters stand out in my memory. The youngest girl had the longest eyelashes I had ever seen. Her sister was jealous and did everything she could to enhance her eyelash growth. Mind you, she was only six, but she got in trouble several times for stealing eyelash products like mascara and curlers from her mom.

It gets worse. One day while her little sister was sleeping, she actually cut off her sister’s lashes! It was horrible and the whole house was in an uproar. No one knew if her eyelashes would grow back. I mean, who cuts their eyelashes off? It was a new experience for all of us.

Getting those Lashes to Grow

If we had just thought about it we would have realized that eyelashes grow back. But the little girl was so sad without her trademark eyelashes that we were all pretty freaked out. Her mother tried all sorts of remedies. The little girl even endured eyelash treatments that involved rubbing castor oil on her eyelids.

This is before the internet, so her mom really had no idea what she was doing.  Plus, back in the day (no, I won’t say how long ago), there really weren’t any eyelash growth serums or conditioners.

Eyelashes have Growth Spurts, Too

I wish I knew then what I know now. Just like all of your other hair, there is an eyelash growth cycle. It has growth phases as well as rest phases. Some of us are fortunate enough to have just the right combination of rest and growth that leads to full and long lashes. Others are stuck having to make do with what we have.

There are a couple of basic things we can do to help our eyelashes along. First, we have to be healthy.  Trust me; I know it’s hard–but if you eat right, everything you want to grow will grow, and what you want to shrink will shrink.

The second step is trickier because it ties into the eyelash growth cycle. Basically, you have to figure out a way to shorten the period your lashes take to rest so there is less time between eyelashes falling out and growing back in.
(p.s. Her eyelashes grew back and were just as awesome as before.)
